About Life in the Center

When I began my adventures in FacebookLand, I was instantly displeased by the political posts that inundated my daily foray into FB Land. In fact, I unfriended a considerable number of my newfound “friends.”

In recent times, I seldom go the unfriending route. But I’m still unhappy with both the number and the content of most of the political attacks. And as we all know, almost all such attacks are directed at Trump.

I didn’t vote for the man—nor for the woman. I wrote in the name John Kasich. In my view, the political situation has been deteriorating for about a quarter of a century, or since Papa Bush held sway. The center has not held—except within the electorate. So much news is no more than propaganda. It’s hard to find fair and dispassionate coverage of what’s going on in the nation. In my view, the gold standard for news is the Wall Street Journal, which sticks to the old-fashioned formula, Just the Facts.

Many of the attacks on Trump are over the edge. “Anyone but Trump”? Another Hitler, maybe? Another Mussolini? Another Stalin? A scandal-plagued Secretary of State who appears to have broken many a law? An angry old socialist who hasn’t changed his mind since puberty? A broken old man with signs of dementia, who was once a joke among liberals, and who seems to have used his influence to get high-paying gigs for his relatives?

Trump is, of course, guilty of many sins. Self-absorption. Excessive self-regard. Hatred of enemies, supposed and real. Incurious. But what about his accusers? Hatred of enemies? Incurious (how widely do they read? Anything other than the NYT and the WaPo?) And what about the reports that the (Il)liberal Establishment has done much to delegitimize his election? We’ll see, of course.

How did we come to this sorry pass? This is the question that perplexes me. Why have so many people, many of whom are supposedly educated, come to be readers and purveyors of propaganda? My hunch is that the answer may come from research into the education system.
